The Bitou River House is perfectly situated to access all the activities and attractions of Plettenberg Bay and the Garden Route
Bitou River House is situated on the banks of the beautiful Bitou River in the heart of the Garden Route. The Bitou River is renowned for its amazing birdlife and fishing. The perfect destination for a meandering kayak down the river. This stunning villa is set between Plettenberg Bay and Keurboomstrand and is perfectly placed to enjoy the abundance of natural beauty that surrounds it.
Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route is the destination for the discerning visitor and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa. The beauty and variety is truly impressive. We have the Tsitsikamma Mountain range and forest, Robberg Nature Reserve and many beautiful beaches. Some of the popular areas are Natures Valley, The Crags, Keurbooms Beach, the Keurbooms Lagoon, Keurbooms and Bitou Rivers, Lookout, Central and Hobie Beach, Robberg Beach and Robberg Nature Reserve.
Apart from our natural resources, Plettenberg Bay is known for its boutique shops, fine cuisine and restaurants, Polo, Golf, Wine Route, Adventure Activities, theatre and much more; creating the perfect holiday environment. With a moderate climate all year round, it is an ideal holiday destination.
Robberg Nature Reserve is a peninsula very popular with hikers. From the reserve, you have stunning views of the bay, a large variety of Fynbos and birds, the seal colony, ancient caves, beautiful beaches and rock pools. Robberg Beach is a very popular swimming beach with holidaymakers. The beach stretches from the rocks at the Beacon Island all the way to the Robberg Nature Reserve.
Central Beach is a wonderful swimming beach and therefore very popular. It always has a festive atmosphere. There is a restaurant, the ski boat club, ablutions and a takeaway shop on the beach. A little further on Hobie Beach hosts the boats for whale watching, fishermen, sailing yacht and sea kayaking. The corner of Hobie Beach is popular with surfers
Although Lookout beach has pretty much been washed away, nature has provided some beautiful beaches on the lagoon. Lookout remains very popular for its gorgeous views. Plettenberg Bay has a large lagoon with beautiful beaches. Ideal for swimming, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing and walking. The lagoon is very popular with families who have small children.
The Beach at Keurbooms, a few kilometres away from Bitou River House, is magnificent. The beach seems to go on forever. It is never crowded and the ideal spot for nature lovers. Take long walks, soak up the sun and enjoy the natural splendour of this beach. There are quite rough currents here but one can splash around, but we do not suggest swimming. Keurbooms is also popular for fishermen.
At Keurbooms beach, to the left of Enrico’s restaurant, there is a wonderful hike at low tide to Arch Rock. Beautiful rock pools, the “blow hole” ancient Middens, a lagoon and the magnificent Arch Rock make this hike unforgettable. Again, swimming is not recommended – just safe paddling.
Natures Valley is approximately 15-20 minutes drive from Plettenberg Bay. With its stunning lagoon ideal for swimming, beautiful beach, nature reserve and stunning forest, Natures Valley is paradise. Swimming in the sea could be dangerous due to currents however the lagoon is wonderful to swim in. Natures Valley is the end of the Otter Trail and has some wonderful hiking trails and picnic spots.
At any of our beaches, you may spot some of the marine mammals that visit our area; whales, dolphins and seals. The occasional Orca is a treat! Look out for the beautiful Pansy Shell when enjoying a walk on the beach. With the backdrop of majestic mountains, it is no wonder the Portuguese called it Bahia Formosa – beautiful bay!
Nature lovers spend hours on the beach, hiking in the forest, sea kayaking, canoeing, taking photos and viewing our wonderful marine life. The bay is host to whales, dolphins, seals and other pelagic birds and mammals. For others the glamour of Plettenberg Bay is an inviting jewel. It is the place to be seen and a meeting place for socialites from all over the world.
